I've read the Hungarian government in 1945 seeked 470000 units of Salvarsan to treat the so called Lenin Sickness -- syphilis. Is this true?
There is a part titled Health/Veneral Disease, in the book, Magyarország a XX. században
A kérdőíves felmérés alapján 1913-ban Magyarország összes kórházában 56 167 nemi beteg állt gyógykezelés alatt, a tényleges számot azonban a felmérés az ambuláns betegekkel együtt 434 ezerre becsülte
~ According to a survey from 1913 the hospitals treated 56.167 patients with veneral disease, but their real number was around 434.000
Az 1940. évi felmérés szerint a vidéki lakosság 16%-a nemi beteg volt, a lakosság kb. 4%-a volt szifiliszes (ebben a kikezeltek is benne foglaltattak) ... 1945-ben az új szifiliszesek száma 15 061...
~ According to a survey from 1940, 16% of the rural population suffered from vd., and 4% had syphilis (including cured patients) ... there were 15.061 new syphilis cases in 1945 ...
Thats ~ 360.000 people with syphilis in 1940, that could have topped 400.000 till 1945.
From the Orvostörténeti Közlemények, 1970
A háború utolsó esztendeiben rendkívül felszökött a szifiliszes betegek száma.
~ The number of syphilis cases went very high in the last years of the war. There were 1300 new cases alone in 1950. And they didnt had Salvarsan. Someone found a bigger amount of Salvarsan in Magyar Pharma warehouses, but its was untested. So they needed mice to test it, and they needed milk to feed the mice. Dr. Oszkár Solt, a young co-worker of the Ministry of Health organized the fight against skin and veneral diseases, and rode his own motorcycle to the towns major, Zoltán Vas, and asked for (nursling)milk-tickets for the mice.
