Why did Portugal hold on to its colonies far longer than other European countries?

Additional question - I was once told that the Portugese lease on Macau was supposed tobe perpetual. If this was true,why was Macau returned to China alongside Hong Kong? Since they were willing to fight India in Goa, why didnt they oppose China in Macau?

Additional question - many European countries--such as Portugal--had colonies in the New World (it seems that the most sought after were the Caribbean Islands, for many reasons), these countries' colonies were especially in conflict during the 18th century. What colonies did Portugal have, in this area, during this time?
