I'm currently living in China but know almost nothing about it's history (I learned western european at school, but only till 14). I know (very) vaguely, i.e. almost nothing, about the cultural revolution, Mao, confucianism/buddhism/communism. Where would I look to gain insight into this county's history and culture? Are there any must-read books/documentaries/films/blogs etc you would recommend? Thank you in advance for any advice/tips you might have.
For a broad overview, I would suggest Valerie Hansen; the Open Empire. This book covers everything from the Shang to the Ming.
For a more in-depth dynastic overview, I would suggest the history of Imperial China series edited by Timothy Brooks. China's Last Empire; The Great Qing by William T. Rowe is one of the best history books written on the Qing, for instance.
For more modern history, Rebecca E. Karl Mao Zedong and China in the Twentieth Century World gives a good short summary of China's history.
Alternatively, if one area piques your interest, you may want to read the Cambridge history of China, which can usually be found at your local university or reference library.
