Here is an example of the term being used to describe a theatre actor in The Gentleman's and London Magazine dated July 1765. I'm not certain this is the first time it was ever used. The phrase is used quite explicitly which, to me, suggests it wasn't a very common thing to say when this was written, meaning it's probably an early example.
