The word 'police' is French in origin!

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word was first used in 15th century French, derived from late Latin 'politia'.

It originally meant 'civil administration', but soon came to mean 'administration of public order', and then 'the people who administered public order'. The first English use is from the 16th century.

Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian have the same roots as French. Other European languages were influenced by French and often adopted French words.
