As the Battle of Midway opened, the American carriers were to the north-east of Midway Island, with the Japanese carriers to their west. The Japanese carriers closed on Midway, in order to launch an strike against the airfield there. This strike failed to do serious damage to the airfield, especially as most of its striking power had already been launched against the Japanese fleet. These strikes would trickle in over the course of the morning, disorganising the Japanese combat air patrol (CAP). As strikes from Midway attacked the Japanese fleet, the American carriers were launching their strike. The aircraft from the veteran USS Yorktown maintained cohesion, with the fighters, torpedo bombers and dive bombers travelling together to the Japanese fleet. In contrast, the squadrons from Hornet and Enterprise followed completely separate plans. Hornet's air group commander, Stanhope Ring, believed that the Japanese fleet was further south than they actually were. He led his dive-bombers and fighters on this erroneous course, while the torpedo bombers, under the command of John Waldron, followed the course suggested by the initial contact reports. Enterprise's fighters misidentified Waldron's torpedo bombers, and followed them, assuming they were from Enterprise. Enterprise's two squadrons of dive bombers followed a slightly different course to her torpedo bombers, putting them behind the Japanese fleet. The torpedo bombers from Hornet were the first to arrive at the Japanese fleet, followed shortly by those from Enterprise. Half an hour later, Yorktown's airgroup arrived. The torpedo bombers made their attack while the dive bombers made it into an advantageous attacking position. As Yorktown's dive bombers maneuvered, the dive bombers from Enterprise arrived. They had been wandering, lost, in the wake of the Japanese fleet, until they sighted the wake of the destroyer Arashi. Arashi had been detached from the Japanese fleet to attack the submarine Nautilus, and was returning to her station with the fleet. She would lead Enterprise's dive bombers to the Japanese fleet. Yorktown's dive bombers attacked Soryu, while most of Enterprise's attacked Kaga. Three aircraft from Enterprise would attack Akagi. Had Enterprise's squadrons not found Arashi, and hence the Japanese fleet, two of the carriers would not have been attacked - Enterprise's dive bombers were reaching the limit of their endurance, with a few ditching before they could return to the carrier.
