Seeing how the Allies controlled North Africa and parts of Italy by this point, why was France invaded from the top, and not the bottom in order to open the second front?

A question of supplies. Britain was one big supply depot, they could ferry supplies a lot quicker to Normandy than to Italy/south France.
Also air cover - Normandy was in range of fighter/bombers at the time.
I also suppose terrain came into, Italy and southern France are a lot more hilly and mountainous than the north, and as you know that favours the defenders a lot more than the attackers.
