I'm reading a couple books about wars fought in Africa (such as the First/Second Congo War) and it touches very briefly on wars of decolonization. I'd like to learn a little more about the Angolan Civil War, since it had such an interesting Cuban intervention to it. Some book recommendations would be nice too.
The 1987-88 battle of Cuito Cuanavale in the south-east is credited with convincing at least one or possibly all sides to come to terms. Who won remains contested, western sources tending to emphasise Cuban losses, their opponents pointing to South Africa's subsequent withdrawal from Namibia - which makes it difficult to recommend anyone.
But perhaps the key battle was the one at Ebo/"Bridge 14" a dozen years earlier in Nov-Dec 1975, when South Africa's initial intervention had been stalled on the road to Luanda. In February 1976 the MPLA seemed to have swept all before it. Hopes of an early end to the conflict faded, but the MPLA stayed.
