I've seen some movies that have war drums in the background. Is it just a fictional thing or were they really used when an army marched into battle?
I believe this previous question may be pertinent here. In short, yes drummers did accompany their regiments into battle. Their purpose was largely command and control but they did play to lift spirits on occasion.
