How was Africa’s potential for rapid economic and political development destroyed by the Atlantic Slave trade?

Most slaves weren't captured by Europeans, they were traded to them, lots of African kingdoms like the Ashanti grew rich from trading slaves taken from conquered neighbors to the Dutch and Portuguese. Also east Africa was the center for the majority of the Atlantic slave trade while west Africa wouldn't see powerful European influence until the true colonial era.
