In Greek they used their letters to represent numbers. They had an alphabetical order like we do and the first nine letters (alpha through theta) were 1-9. The next nine were 10-90 by tens. The last nine were 100-900 by 100s. They used obsolete letters for counting hence they have more numbers than letters. Here's a chart.
