My grandmother had stories of buying rice from a shop in the local village in the Kresy in the 1930s, and I was wondering how rice ended up as a staple there if it wasn't local.
Poland was importing around 60,000 tons a year around 1930, 50,000 tons in the depressed mid-1930s - only 1½-2kg per head, but it would have been available though not a widespread staple. Interesting that it should have made it to an eastern village shop. Germany was a major importer with a significant re-export: it may have come via there.
