Well the myth was that since Hercules was the son of Zeus and a mortal, Hera (Zeus' wife) was angry that Zeus had slept with someone else(although Zeus sleeping around is a good chunk of Greek Mythology). Hera put a curse or hex on Hercules and made him go crazy and kill his family to get revenge on Zeus
