I was thinking about the socioeconomic inequality that persists in the US, particularly with respect to African Americans, and I want to be able put it into a historical and international context. Has any oppressed minority group ever achieved real socioeconomic equality? I ask because if the answer is no, it provides valuable context and speaks to the difficulty inherent in overcoming various barriers. And if the answer is yes, I want to know what we can learn and how comparable the situations are. Thank you.
And by modern times, I mean in the last few hundred years maybe?
It depends on your definition of oppressed minority. Do you mean strictly those groups who were slaves? For example, would you include groups like the Chinese, Japanese, Jews, etc? Many of whom have had their belongings and wealth taken from them, and severely discriminated against. Then you can add groups like the Irish. It's sort of a spectrum. So if you could specify further it might be easier for someone to answer.
Either way I think the answer you will get is very politically charged and will depend on what lens you use.
