From my reading on what it was like as an average woman running her household before major appliances were available to the middle to lower income homes, major chores were broken up throughout the week: one day would be laundry day (washing, putting them on the line to dry, ironing etc), one day would be devoted to gardening (if you had a garden), one day would be set aside for all the marketing and you would buy everything needed for that week then. One day would be for cleaning (dusting, scrubbing, beating out rugs, etc) Then there would of course be the daily chores of cooking, washing up after, making beds, sweeping and all the things needed to be done day to day. Mending clothes or knitting would be something done in the evening before bed.
