So caveat first, this is research for a low fantasy novel, so the actual geography and societies will vary, but I'm trying to keep it pretty grounded.

I have three people, one adult male, two female children, setting out on a long overland journey, and I'm trying to figure out what they would carry. My starting point would be Ötzi the Iceman, but he's a couple of millennia earlier than the period I'm looking at, and he was probably making a relatively short journey, so I'm trying to fill things out.

I'm particularly curious about how my characters would make fire on the journey. Would they be limited to friction methods like bow drills, or would they carry embers with them? When was the flint-and-iron method discovered? Any suggestions would be gratefully received!
