Can anyone suggest a website or other resource I could check to get political maps of the world at various times? Not necessarily maps published in particular years, just an idea of where borders were in particular years?
UT Austin's Perry-Castañeda Library has probably the biggest online collection as well as a good selection of links to other sites.
Check out the library of congress -- the map room is pretty astounding. I think large parts of the collection is now online.
