Patton famously wanted to continue the war against the USSR, and presumably some voices within the USSR would have argued likewise. If the use of atomic bombs in Japan in August 1945 put a brake on potential conflict, could either side have continued the war given their actual circumstances in May 1945? Did it nearly happen?
