I'm reading the book Erased by Omer Bartov for a class, and it briefly mentions a right-wing Ukrainian political party called the Social-National Party of Ukraine and its logo, which is this runic-looking stylized N with a slash through it, sort of like a Wolfsangel symbol. Bartov writes: "The party's symbol combines an SS-like rune and a cross into a shape closely resembling a swastika, under which the words 'The National Idea' are written". And then there's a footnote, which says "The Ukrainian script appears as 'Iдея Nації' rather than 'Ідея Нації', presumably playing on the similarity between the Ukrainian word for nation and the term Nazi as the German abbreviation for National Socialist... I would like to thank Marco Carynnyk for illuminating comments on the long tradition in Ukraine of replacing the Cyrillic Н with the Roman N. This only seems to confirm my suspicion of a conscious allusion to Nazism in the case under discussion here."

Does anyone know anything about this "long tradition"? Is it that right-wing Ukrainian nationalists spell the word "nation" with a Roman rather than a Cyrillic N when they're writing in Ukrainian as a kind of fascist dog-whistle allusion to the Nazis? Is this something that's done just by this one particular group, or do other groups do it, too? Where are some other places the Roman N is used instead of the Cyrillic one? How long has this been going on? Is the Roman N used in words other than "nation"?
