Anyway, the short answer is no. Erwin Rommel was never a member of the NSDAP, he was however an open admirer of Hitler as a person and deeply involved in the Nazi power structure (for example he was responsible for Hitler Youth training). Rommel did not permit his son to join the SS, however this may well have been more a case of "I was a member of the army, my father was a member of the army and you will be too" than anything else (at least if the conversation went as Manfred himself retold it).

As to him being chivalrous I would say the answer is yes, even uncommonly so. He refused to relay certain orders (the execution of commandos, execution of Jewish civilians and POWs etc) and reportedly treated prisoners well. The Afrika Korps was never accused of war crimes and instructed his soldiers to fight "a war without hate".

I do not agree that he was viewed highly as a strategist but that's really a minor point in this context and something that has been discussed at length in other posts. He was however a brilliant tactician.
