Like the title says, I'm trying to think of interesting topics to research for my class on Soviet history, and would love to hear what others see as a thought provoking topic.

You didn't mention your level of education, or if this class is a part of a degree that you're seeking, so I am assuming basic level Soviet history course for students who are not necessarily working toward a specific degree in that era. That said:
The Great Purge with a focus on the death of Trotsky is always something that students tend to be really interested in. It shows a lot about Stalin's paranoia and character, and gives good insight into a pre-WWII Soviet Union.
It's a great surface starter topic for those who have some interest in the Soviet Union but not much background.
