A long time ago, I remember reading about the early American government asking to join a European nation during financial crisis, but I can't find anything on it because I don't know what to search. Can anyone help me?

I think it was Prussia, addressed to King Frederick II. I don't know. This is driving me nuts.

In 1786 Nathaniel Gorham apparently proposed to Alexander Hamilton that Prince Henry of Prudsia become the King of the United States, which may be what you're thinking of. Even the early American government would have never seriously proposed joining another European country, even in a financial crisis
