Austro-Hungarian troops were transferred to the Italian front, and renewed the offensive at Caporetto in November 1917 alongside a gas attack from the Germans. They were able to advance more than sixty miles before the Italians rallied and halted them at the Piave River. A year later almost exactly(Oct. 24-November 3), the Italians counterattacked(with six French and five British divisions in support) and inflicted a decisive defeat on the Austro-Hungarians at the Battle of Venoria Veneto, and sent the Austro-Hungarian army into a rout. The army started to disintegrate with the increasing instability of the Empire(which after October 31 was no longer Austria-Hungary, as Hungary had ended the Union), and what was by then essentially only Austria signed an Armistice on November 3
