In many books on WW1, Franz Joseph referred to as "emperor" rather than "kaiser". Is this purely to distinguish him from Kaiser Wilhelm, or are there other reasons?
There are no other reasons, in german he is called Kaiser Franz Joseph. To make that clear: the austrian national anthem was called "Gott erhalte Franz, den Kaiser" (God save Emperor Franz)
