I'd like to find a good place I can learn about the history of Ukraine, I do not know much about the country or it's history outside of the Chernobyl disaster and having a friend who lives in Ukraine I think it'd be something worth learning but I don't really know what sources I should be looking in to to learn.
If anyone here knows anything about the history of Ukraine or anywhere I can find information on the topic I would like to know.
Orest Subtelny's "Ukraine: A History" is a comprehensive account of Ukrainian history. You can also check Serhii Plokhy's recent "The Gates of Europe: A History of Ukraine". Admittedly I haven't read it yet so can not vouch directly for it, but he is a respectable historian and an engaging writer. Timothy Snyder has also written a lot about Ukraine's history, which is placed in a larger context of Eastern Europe (and Europe in general) in his works. His "Bloodlands" is a brilliant book and is worth reading regardless of one's interest in Ukraine's (and other nations who suffered massively under Hitler's and Stalin's regimes) interwar and WW2 history.
