Firstly, the Hollywood films are right to an extent. In many ancient sites, vast amounts of gold HAVE been found. Converting the figure of gold Hatshepsut claims to have given to Karnak, works out at 487 kg. While this is far higher than the amount you might expect in a tomb, it’s important to remember Tutankhamun’s funerary mask, as especially considering his tomb was fairly small by Pharaonic standards, was pure gold. So they were certainly using the material in large quantities.

Largely, Egypt mined its own gold, as it was one of the minerals it had plenty off. Most mines were in the north-eastern desert, where not only gold but also semi-precious stones and Alabaster could be found. Mining missions were organised by the Pharaoh. Though not pertaining to gold, one inscription from Gebel Silsila by Akhenaten reads ‘the leaders of the army perform a great forced-labour duty of quarrying sandstone’, indicating how this was a state organised task.
