Was public consummation of marriage ever "a thing"?

by leverhelven

I was just reading wikipedia's article on Maria Theresa of Spain. There's a part that says:

After the wedding, Louis wanted to consummate the marriage as quickly as possible. The new queen's mother-in-law (and aunt) arranged a private consummation instead of the public one that was the custom. [citation needed]

Granted, Wikipedia has a lot of unsourced shit, and they did warn that that assessment lacked a citation. So I was wondering if such a thing was ever a habit in European courts, or even daily life.

Thank you.
