The general path of I-95 has gone through many, many updates over the centuries. It's first organized incarnation is the Kings Highway which ran from Boston to Charleston. It was built between 1650 and 1735. The section between New York City and Boston was finished in 1673 and was known as the Boston Post Road. Called the Pequot Trail before this, it was a common foot path. US Route 1, 5, and 20 still follow the original highway. This highway developed piecemeal throughout the 19th and 20th centuries with turnpike companies updating small sections. By 1800 there were 69 of these private companies and hundreds more in the rest of the century. I-95 was started in 1957 and still technically isn't finished. It utilized many of the turnpikes that were already present to speed up the job.
