Why were shields uncommon in Feudal Japanese warfare?

by Gothic_Sunshine

I am aware that the Japanese did at times use shields, but it seems to have been rather uncommon. Any reason I could think of would be unfounded speculation. Are there any primary sources that discuss shields and provide an explanation for eschewing them? Any well founded academic theories?
