Has any candidate won their primary election for their respective party and then been turned down by the party?

Meaning the US and just any of the US history. Not really sure when primaries started either.

BDTexas

Hubert Humphrey lost the majority of the primaries for the Democratic party in 1968, but clinched the nomination after the assassination of Robert Kennedy and some political wheeling and dealing at the Chicago convention. It's a really fascinating affair and the repercussions of it shaped a lot of how the parties select their candidate today. I wrote a longer post about this and the subsequent birth of superdelegates a while ago. It doesn't offer much more to answer your question that what I provided, but if you're interested in more I could link it here.
