Hubert Humphrey lost the majority of the primaries for the Democratic party in 1968, but clinched the nomination after the assassination of Robert Kennedy and some political wheeling and dealing at the Chicago convention. It's a really fascinating affair and the repercussions of it shaped a lot of how the parties select their candidate today.
