I think there are a range of answers to this question and I am in no way an expert in this field, but having read Victor Klemperer's journal accounts, a very fascinating revelation were the comparisons of the NSDAP government to the early Bolshevist government. From an economic standpoint many said, again in Klemperer's account, that too much nationalisation and little planning was taking place, thus ruin for the already struggling country would lead to quick collapse. This opinion obviously changed.
