I cannot speak with authority for later periods but in early periods (Protogeometric and Geometric periods) it is not uncommon for us to find burials of dogs. These were often placed inside pottery vessels, sometimes after cremation, and buried, in many cases within the house, under the floor. This is a clear indication that dogs were not just another type of domesticated animal, but pets in the true sense, "part of the family" and so on.

Additionally, pictorial pottery from the period depicts packs of hunting dogs and are often interpreted as signifiers of elite status.
