Anthony Bourdain is the guy who has many series of shows traveling the world where he experiences culture and food in tandem with each other in a really cool way. Every time the topic of cheese comes up, he refers to the cheese market, or regulation, or industry in general as "an evil fascist dictatorship that ruins lives (sarcastically).
To ask more directly, what happened in the history of cheese to make him say stuff like that?
I'm afraid this whole thread might violate the stricture against discussing recent events, and I'm not a huge Bourdain fan these days, but I suspect he might be annoyed with the European Union's Protected Designation of Origin laws. These laws are designed to protect traditional foodways and handicrafts by limiting the geographic regions and means of production for such products as wine, cheese, olive oil, and other traditional foodstuffs. For example, in order to be called Champagne a wine must be made in a traditional way within the Champagne region. There are similar rules governing such products as Pecorino Romano or Brie cheese, for example.
