What about lighter looking Hispanics, or those (if there were any) that spoke fluent English?
I'm sorry for the purposefully vague "segregation era", but I'm sadly ignorant of racial relations in the south, and don't really know how else to specify the time I'm thinking about. I hope you guys understand what I'm trying to talk about.
I've posted about this previously here. Latino/Hispanic Americans were treated much the same as any other ethnic minority in the United States in that period, subject to violence and segregation. In regards to lighter skinned Hispanics "passing" as white, there are many examples of African and Asian Americans "passing" so i'm sure that it happened in many cases across the South and Southwest though no specific instance comes to mind.
