Did African tribes know how slaves were being treated before selling their people?

I hope I'm not in the wrong sub, but I'm just curious.

They generally weren't selling "their people", they were selling members of a different grouping and possibly a member of a different ethnic group all together. There wasn't really any conception of pan-African or black identity, and in fact there was a very serious religious divide with Muslim and pagan statelets very close together.
