He championed and later forced the implementation of the Indian Removal Act, which saw the US Army forcibly march several tribes of Native Americans from the southeast to Oklahoma. In doing this, he flaunted a direct Supreme Court ruling striking down the act as unconstitutional. This was one of the darkest moments in US-Indian relations, and being the cause of it has not won Jackson many proponents in the modern period.
