Split-ticket voting rose from 1952 to 1972 and hovered around 25% until it started declining sometimes after 1992. For example, in 1988 more than half to the democratic representatives in the house came from states that voted for George Bush, a republican, for president. This ticket splitting was somewhat greatest in the south but seems to have been common everywhere actually. NC is one of those states that tends to ticket-split.
