A militia implies that civilians should receive some sort of military grade training and weapons, which of course is not/no longer the case. When and how did this change come about?
Adding onto this, for what purpose did 18th and early 19th Century Americans use their guns? That is, what sort of threats did they face? Did they rely on guns for purposes besides self-defense?
