Im considering getting a tamaskan puppy. All my pets are named after figures from the ancient world. My two cats are Ramses and Cleopatra, for example. Anyway I'd like to name my potential pup after a legendary wolf from mythology, preferably Slavic. Other mythologies are fine too, I was wondering if you dandy bunch could help me come up with a list of potential names. Care to give it a shot?
Cerberus/Kerberos the hound of Hades, with three heads, who guarded the entry to the Greek afterlife. (Also, the Philosopher's Stone.)
Pricolici, a werewolf-like demon from Romanian mythology.
Varcolac, somewhere between a werewolf and a vampire in Slavic mythologies. Actual spelling and pronunciation varies.
Romulus and Remus were supposedly weaned by wolves. J.K. Rowling used the name Remus for a good werewolf.
Geri and Freki from Norse mythology. They are Odin's pets, and considered good omens.
Lycaon, from Greek mythology. This king of Arcadia was turned into a wolf as punishment for his crimes.
Modern examples:
Wolves in Western European mythology are rarely named. "Redhoodsbane" is a cool name, though, right?
Shaggy Dog, Summer, Grey Wind, Ghost, Lady and Nymeria are all direwolves from A Song of Ice and Fire.
Jacob. Please no.
"Argos" was Odysseus' dog, who waited faithfully for twenty years for him to return from the Trojan War. When Odysseus finally returned, Argos recognized him even though he was disguised, wagged his tail, and then died of old age after seeing his master one last time.
Few slightly less well known names I can think of:
Garm - guardian of hell from the Nordic myths.
Orthus (or Orthrus) - 2 headed dog from Greek mythology, brother of Cerberus.
The only dog-like creature from Slavic mythology I can think of right now would be Simargl.
Fenrir was the wolf that fought Odin at Ragnarok.
An interesting choice could be Anubis, the jackal-headed Egyptian god of death and burials
Hey out of curiosity who are you getting a Tamaskan puppy from? I've got a Tamaskan named after mythology too! One of my Tamaskans is Echo (from Echo and Narcissus). I'm a software developer, so it has a double meaning.
