I have a a very vague idea about the Wars of the Roses. I know something about their aftermath as I have read about the Tudor period from the time of Henry VII, but I want some detailed knowledge about the Wars themselves as well as why they happened.
I am looking for books which analyze and describe why these events happened - the historical roots - long and short term, as well as the detailed description about the events themselves - battles, politics etc.
I am perfectly ok with reading multiple books to get a complete picture, and detailed academic works are extremely welcome.
I recently read The Wars of the Roses: The Fall of the Plantagenets and the Rise of the Tudors by Dan Jones that gives a pretty thorough overview of the period starting with Henry V's death and ending during Henry VII's reign. Jones really goes into the political infighting that led to multiple factions vying for the crown, and the different family rivalries etc. It's about 400 pages so not a total doorstopper but not lightweight either.
