I know that fascism is all the rage these days in political forums, but I'm confused by the constant assertion that it is a radical leftist ideology. I've always understood that it was an extremist right movement in RESPONSE to more left-wing groups. Such as the fascist parties of the WWII era being a response to communism.

Can it actually be either? I'm hoping a political historian could weigh in on this.
