What was combat like in WW2; was it as fast paced as cinema and games major out it was it a much slower and methodical affair?

I can imagine a lot of combat would have consisted of a bunch of blokes hiding behind some cover taking pot shots until one side took the initiative/ support turned up; I can imagine modern combat is similar but that's all I can do as I luckily have 0 experience of fighting in a war.
