You're probably going to be running; it's a myth that the British went over the top at the Somme at walking pace. Based on the research done by Robin Prior and Trevor Wilson, of the over 80 British and Empire battalions that attacked on July 1st, c. 50 were in no man's and when the attack began, c. 15 ran for the parapet from their trenches, and c. 10 walked, but behind a creeping barrage.

Attacks could involve running, in short bursts, from cover to cover and/or utilizing fire and movement. An attack could be made by burrowing under no man's land and attacking via 'Russian Saps' (charges are blown, men emerge from the saps in front of or near enemy trenches), or moving at a steady pace, not necessarily walking slowly, behind a creeping barrage and/or tanks.
