I recently read and was actually really impressed with Peter Ackroyd's The Tudors. It is definitely popular history so it's not exactly cutting edge research, and it does focus more on the Big People of the age rather than society more generally, but it's a very engaging read and (at least as far as I can tell) it doesn't commit any egregious errors in historiography. In particular the reason I liked it so much is that I generally don't find the Tudors to be particularly interesting, but I was given it as a gift, and I was actually engaged and interested the whole way through.
