What book could I read about this? I'm not an historian, and I don't want to read a boring academic book (or too in depth).
I've enjoyed 'The French Revolution' by Christopher Hibbert (1980), seems not too academic... and though not really about the French Revolution Barbara Tuchman's wonderful (okay - anything by her is joy to read) 'The First Salute - a View of the American Revolution' might be just what you're looking for!
When the King Took Flight by Timothy Tackett is fantastic. Covers Louis XVI's flight from Paris, the conspiracy beforehand, the consequences after. Very readable and enlightening.
