I read the book "Intelligence Elsewhere: Spies and Espionage Outside the Anglosphere" and I loved it, but I am wondering if there are other books about the history of these organizations that anyone can recommend? I have read a number of histories about the British, American and Canadian intelligence services and I am interested about others (hopefully in English translations). Thank you.
Christopher Andrew wrote two books (The Sword and the Shield from 1999 and The World was Going Our Way from 2005) based on notes taken by Vasili Mitrokhin from his years as a KGB archivist. I haven't read them in some time, but I remember finding them enjoyable and informative.
There are two that I have at my workplace:
China's security state : philosophy, evolution, and politics by Guo Xuezhi (Modern China)
The Tao of spycraft : intelligence theory and practice in traditional China by Ralph D. Sawyer (Ancient China)
The Art of War has a chapter dedicated entirely to the use of spies in warfare, so a translated version should be a great read as well.
