Why are there so many little countries in Eastern Europe while in Western Europe there are less but bigger countries?

Did Eastern European countries no focus on expansion that much as Western Nations?

  1. Depending on how you count it (I have divided them below as I have seen fit, but it is far from a set delineation), there are more people, and square miles in Eastern Europe
  2. There are more countries, despite there being fewer square miles and people, in Western Europe
  3. The top twenty largest has ten countries from the East, and ten from the West
  4. The top twenty most populated has ten from the East, and ten from the West
