Well the Vikings encountered Romans not ruins. They made it down the rivers to the black sea and traded with the Byzantine empire. They also made up the famous imperial bodyguard called the Varangian Guard who worked directly for the emperor in Constantinople. You can see Norse runes etched into a railing in the Hagia Sophia (I've seen it personally). So the experience for at least some Vikings was not ruins but Romans.
