I had a book ages ago regardin dirty secrets of world war 2, one of these secrets was that the us United States intended to drop the first atomic weapons on Germany, is there any basis for this?
Follow up: would anyone know whT the book was? Follow up unrelated; are there any books on construction of high security clearance facilities? My mind starts with "who built the Manhattan project buildings?" followed by "who built the missle silos in the 50s and 60s?"
If the US had had nuclear weapons in time for them to be useful in the European war, it might have used them on Germany. FDR did ask about this in late 1944. But the bombs weren't ready. All concrete plans regarding using the bombs had Japan in mind, because of the timescale. US work on atomic bombs was started out of a fear that the Germans might get one first, but gradually they realized the Germans didn't have a project.
I don't know of any book that is specifically on the construction of any "high-security clearance facilities." The Manhattan Project sites were created using industrial contractors and the Army Corps of Engineers. DuPont built the Hanford reactors, for example. The construction work on the project required immense amounts of labor; almost none of them had any idea what they were constructing. There is a nice chapter on the construction of Oak Ridge in Thomas Hughes' American Genesis: A Century of Invention and Technological Enthusiasm, which compares it with other US mega-projects of the New Deal era, specifically the Tennessee Valley Authority.
