Since some people here have mentioned they don't get a lot of questions related to their interests, I'll note that the weekly features are a great way to help with that, specifically the Tuesday Trivia. I largely gained the "hockey" part of my credentials by writing about something hockey-related in those, no matter how loosely related it is. And often the topics are vague enough that nearly anything can be discussed, and so long as you have a decent, coherent post, it will usually help in one's quest to be flaired. It would also be good so that its not just me posting some random thing about hockey history every Tuesday.

Hey, uh... can I get a flair?

I'm specialized in early modern German history, and thus am quoting almost always German literature. Is this of any hinderance when applying for a flair? I'm not quite ready for it yet though, as questions about my time period are fairly rare. Just wanted to ask before-hand.

Just chiming in to emphasize this. I would be absolutely thrilled to have a few more Africanists get flaired.

Personally, I would be super-extra-doubleplusgood-thrilled if we had people knowledgeable about pre-colonial Lakes Region, pre-colonial West African forest kingdoms, Kush/Nubia, or French colonial experience, or Lusophone Africa, or post-colonial Africa, or African Thought.

Props to all you flaired users - as much as I love this sub, I wouldn't be one, if I were qualified.

I, uh, guess I'm one of like a dozen living experts on Swedish armored vehicle development (and to a lesser extent the Swedish Cold War military and military industry), but I don't think I've ever seen a question about anything even tangentially related to that. I don't think anyone cares about it. I dunno where I was going with this really but if anyone wants to know anything at all about the development and use of the S-tank or about how a country with a population about the size of London's ended up building its own jet fighters, I'm your man.

I wish people had more questions about early New England history.

I am a historian, and I'm about to finish my doctoral research on the topic of New Netherland, or the Dutch colony in North America. I would love to have that flair, but that topic doesn't seem to come up very often, and I'm worried I won't be able to meet your comment requirements. I have made a comment or two on unrelated topics in this sub. Any advice?

I would like a flair, however most of my post about history have been outside the sub. My graduate thesis (I have a Master's in Social Work and was a practicing therapist) was about the history of invasive mental health treatments prior to the development of psychiatric drugs, so I have posted in other subreddits about the history of lobotomy and other treatments we perceive as barbaric. I have also posted about the one of subjects covered by my undergraduate thesis, the Satanic Ritual Abuse Scare of the 1980's and early 90's, including the missteps of the mental health caregiving community. My area of historical expertise is the history of psychology and psychiatry.

Would those be acceptable posts? Or should I wait for the topic to come up in this sub?

Would music history be included in the Art section? I feel like it should because music is as much an artform as painting and was just wondering.

I have a history degree and I'm pretty sure I have the ability to write posts to the standards of the subreddit but honestly the time I have to waste on reddit is normally time I'm not at home with all my books, notes, etc.

In my spare time I study (personal continual study as a hobby, not enrolled in any academia) historical Cartography as well as geographical and political borders/delineation. Would this be a legitimate field to apply for a flair when I'm feeling confident enough in my studies to do so?

I only have a minor in history but I believe I am fairly knowledgeable about japanese history from genpei war up to the establishment of the tokugawa shogunate. It seems like we don't really get many questions about late heian or medieval japanese history though.

I want a flair, and a couple of people here (including Zhukov) have suggested I apply for one in the past, but I don't really know what would be suitable for me to claim expertise or specialism in. Is that bad, or do I just need to think about it more?

I would like to join, however I. am not very active on this sub i was a history major for a few years ( no degree) I was raised by my grandfather who gave me a love for it. I rather watch an archeology documentary then some sitcom. My personal expertise covers a few eras, Hellenistic, Roman republic/empire and 20th century, specifically the both world wars and the Korean war.

I know a bit and have a few books on the history of catering, but I do not think questions are asked enough for me to ever qualify!

Haven't posted to the sub but am the creator and moderator at /r/excons. I did 6 years in the 90's and have done three AMA's that have hit the front page. I can speak to incarceration in the 90's if that is ever brought up.

I'd like to recommend this to anyone even remotely interested! You get to be a part of a very interesting and passionate community. Also, no matter how obscure your interests, there will usually be at least a few questions now and again. Those few questions that allow you to pour out all your knowledge and passion at an interested soul, make it all worthwhile!

I'm not ready yet to become a flaired user but I'm very interested in history and would like to learn a subject better. I'm interested in the Middle-East (probably from old Persia to the end of the Ottomans), the Mongol Empire and it's fracturation, China(Probably more ancient and medieval China), the formation of Russian or the Great Migrations(During Rome's collapse and the vikings).

Which subject would you say is the most in-demand or have a lot of sources in english or french? I'm interested in all of those subjects but can't decide which one to learn in depth.

My understanding is that one can only be nominated for the quality contributor flair, and cannot apply for it. Is this accurate?

I'm a medievalist, and there seems to be a lot of us running around. I'm always really tardy to relevant questions! I did my MA dissertation on Joan of Arc and the general presentation of the Middle Ages in the media (film/tv mostly and to a latter extent video games).

I've answered some questions in the past, but they have been scattered about. Am I correct that you can't apply for Quality Contributor but have to be nominated for it?

Quick qustion: I know that anecdotes are not desired as top level answers, but what is this sub's stance on what could qualify as "original research"? (Wikipedia sems to hate it, because it has no isbn...). I'm quite interested in medieval medicin, primarily treating battle wounds, etc. I also build props for movies, reenactors, and roleplayers. I've built a couple of "replicas" from treatuses like Gersdorff's Feldtbuch der Wundartzney, and learned a bit from that, too. Is this kind of stuff (given the refences to histirical sources are there, too) welcome here?

I applied for flair maybe a year ago as a "Quality Contributor," and never received it. Well, in retrospect that was probably fair. Not sure all my answers were up to snuff.

I've now applied for flair for something more specific, and I think I fit the guidelines. I know after posting this thread you likely have several applications to go through, but a) when can we expect a response, b) if we are declined, will we be told ways to boost our chances of getting flair in the future?
